This article expands the theory on the 3 elements of learning derived from Learn Your Way to Success - A Valuable Lesson and blends it with the idea of Working with Purpose. Just how to incorporate the 3 elements of learning into an Instructional Design model?
Let's connect the dots.
The Three Elements of Learning
Gain the Knowledge
Retain the Knowledge
Sustain the Knowledge
Purpose
No matter which learning model we use to facilitate learning, when we apply any of these three elements, we are consciously thinking about the purpose of learning. This gives a strong foundation to what we are about to plan and initiate. Facilitating learning with a purpose in mind, reaps better results!
Now, let’s give a strong foundation to any course or curriculum by aligning these elements with our Instructional Design.
How To
Here, we will use the technology industry, since this is one of the most expansive areas of development where people will benefit the most if they want to improve their skills. The ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model of learning fits best to facilitate learning in this industry, because it mimics the agile approach to software development. ADDIE offers flexible and iterative based structure to learning something new.
For use case, we will assume security training, because this is one area in technology industry that applies to all verticals and functions, and improving understanding of security protocols helps sustain the integrity of products and services across the organization.
To facilitate security training, we assess the knowledge gaps and the need for training and analyze the purpose behind the training. While we gather information and design and develop the training with the help of subject matter experts, we configure which of the three elements would be most applicable for this training. In other words, in what ways will the training be most beneficial for our learners? We come to a conclusion that the "Retain the Knowledge" element best suits this use case, because we want our learners to be able to remember this information in future real time scenarios without having to seek reference.
Having an understanding of this factor is crucial while developing and implementing the training, because it will allow us to curate our curriculum with a purpose in mind. The purpose in this case is to ensure that our audience understands the criticality of security around data and technology. So, each time we collaborate with technical and non-technical subject matter experts and our learners, the training will result in successful implementation. And each iteration of development and implementation will result in increased engagement, hands-on learning and long-term memory application and proactive refinement of the training itself.
Conclusion
Only through successful implementation, we can ensure the most accurate evaluation. The accuracy in evaluation allows us to measure the value in Working with Purpose. Because we have invested sufficient effort towards building a successful training pipeline, it is destined to be a successful initiative because it will not only empower individual learner with impactful knowledge but also will sustain the integrity of the operations and overall organization.
