Evolution is constant. Transformation is an essential part of evolution. Transformation is only possible with ongoing learning. Learning is possible with new information and as the world evolves in technology and spirituality, new information is going to be created and distributed. The new information for this piece of article is my theory on the 3 Elements of Learning.

1.       Gain the knowledge – Having resources made available for people to have information easily accessible to them.

2.       Retain the knowledge – How do we learn best is based on designing the information in such a way that learners absorb it quickly and efficiently.

3.       Sustain the knowledge – In what ways does the information add value for the learner is the key to facilitating the knowledge in the best possible way.

Let’s take AI for an example. Artificial intelligence is calling for new challenges. New challenges require learning new things to resolve situations at hand. Learning new things not only helps us resolve our immediate challenges but also allows us to grow further in life, both personally and professionally. This already concludes that AI provides opportunities for us to grow and achieve more success in whatever we do.

According to research, 70% of workers currently use AI. This data reveals that there are so many people open to learning new things. What it doesn’t reveal is how many of those 70% have benefited from this evolution, which hinders our ability to evaluate future projections and ROI. Unless and until we can evaluate how a product or service adds value for its given clients, we can’t truly validate the value of that product or service. Say that I am an entrepreneur, and I have come up with ideas of handling online transactions more securely. Even though I know that my ideas are impactful, I can’t conclude the effectiveness until they influence people and create value in their lives and businesses in some way or form.

I asked AI what challenges it is facing, and this is what came up:

1.       Job Displacement: AI can automate repetitive tasks, which might lead to job losses in certain sectors like manufacturing and data entry1. This requires careful planning to manage the transition and support affected workers.

2.       Ethical Concerns: AI systems can sometimes exhibit bias, reflecting the data they were trained on1. Ensuring fairness and transparency in AI decision-making is crucial to avoid perpetuating existing inequalities.

3.       Dependence and Over-reliance: Over-relying on AI can lead to a loss of critical thinking and problem-solving skills among workers1. It’s important to strike a balance between leveraging AI for efficiency and maintaining human oversight.

How do we make sure that AI is serving its purpose for which it was created? Of course, through educating the users or potential users on the particular subject. But how do we facilitate it? And more so, how do we make sure that they will gain the most out of the learning initiatives? Here is my answer - By emphasizing on learning how to learn better!

Let’s expand on our 3 Elements of Learning:

Gain the knowledge

Information is everywhere. We are flooded with new information. The availability of information is in abundance. Thanks to the subject matter experts on SEO, availability of any type of information we are looking for is at our fingertips (literally). This element works well for those who have genuine interest in learning new things. Interest-based learning can be facilitated well here, where very less external help is needed, and you can independently learn on your own. An example would be people that take online courses. They can manage and guide themselves. Gaining the knowledge that they are looking for comes easy for them. They have a true interest in a particular subject so they can drive to their growth on their own. Entrepreneurs, freelancers, self-starters and leaders would be the ones to fit in this criterion.

Key questions to ask:

·         Is it something that needs to be made available?

·         How can I ensure that it is available to the right audience at the right time?

·         Can AI automate this process?

Retain the knowledge

Not everyone is an entrepreneur, a self-starter or considers themselves a leader. Overload of information can be overwhelming. How to keep up with all the new information that we gather? Being able to memorize the new information even if it wasn’t an interest-based learning is the key that transforms mind-sets. To be able to design the information in such a way that the learner will remember it for a long time encourages the facilitator to think a bit out-of-the-box. When we incorporate an experience that involves more of our 5 senses, we make the lesson plan engaging and retainable. Inclusion of gamification and/or hands-on problem-solving scenarios is an example of this element. This puts a little more effort on the facilitator to design the information strategically. AI can be a great resource to support the facilitator’s initiatives. This element works well regardless of whether a learner has organic interest or an external source of influence. The key is information + experience = knowledge retention.

Key questions to ask:

·         Is it something that would be best delivered in a broken-down structure with steps, instructions, guides and hands-on activities?

·         What type of planning is required or what approach to take in designing the content?

·         Can generative AI leverage creativity and meaningful activities to make it more engaging?

Sustain the knowledge

To make something sustainable is to solidify the foundation so anything that is built upon that knowledge will automatically continue to grow and have ripple effects to its surroundings. What do I mean by that? Let’s take a construction development project as an example. Whether there are multiple small houses, or one large building that needs to be built, it always starts by digging the ground to give it a strong foundation. Similarly, if we want to achieve the most out of the knowledge we provide or facilitate, it is crucial to first assess and establish a baseline foundation. This involves understanding the learners or participants deeply, so the teaching can be designed based on the core needs of the recipients. This process can include conducting research, gaining insights and establishing a foundational relationship and trust. This also involves accelerating your own learning to be able to educate others. This process becomes most critical because it allows you to curate the design of the curriculum or the informational content so that it would add value for the learner. And when something increases in value the knowledge that comes with it becomes sustainable.

Key questions to ask:

·         Is it something that requires a more comprehensive approach?

·         Do we need to go far beyond the data and analyze the projects, program or business at a deeper level as to what the vision and mission truly calls for?

·         Can we train AI to be more emotionally intelligent to comprehend the core values of the recipients?

·         How do I need to grow to serve others in the best way possible?

Once you’ve decided on which element is best suited for the type of learning you want to facilitate, it’s time to collect data, collaborate with subject matter experts and work on a strategy.

Understanding someone or something at its core builds connection. When you understand where and how it all started, you become invested in the subject. It’s easier to build trust and credibility and thus, add quality to initiatives and create value.  You are no longer providing temporary consultancy and fixes to problems; you are building a long-term solution and a sustainable way to manage operations. You are no longer adhering on the sole area of learning and development, rather making an impact on everything the person or the business is connected to. You begin to see transformation right before your eyes as performance goes up, processes improve, and productivity begins to multiply.

Now, my thought process is merely an idea. So, even though it has served me well, I won’t be able to conclude its effectiveness for the 70% of the population that is open to learning new things, unless the idea is put it into action on a larger scale. Then only we can evaluate the value of learning how to learn better. So, if you are a leader, I strongly encourage you to start implementing these elements of learning into your learning environment, whether it’s a classroom, your entrepreneurial project, or your place of business with hundreds of employees. Just as evolution is constant, so is learning. Make learning part of your everyday routine. Trust me, it will pay you a lifetime of endless success!
